July 25, 2007- The U. S. Department of Health and Human Services is advising patients that it will no longer allow erectile dysfunction drugs, known as PDE-5 inhibitors, to be sold under the name 'Viagra' instead. The drug maker, Pfizer, is trying to change that.
A recent analysis by the U. National Institutes of Health found that the drug industry had a 47 percent drop in sales last year of the drug and that there was "significant cost savings" for the drug.
The analysis, which analyzed data from more than 1,000 patients treated with Viagra, found that a "sales volume of 0.3% or greater" fell from $17.8 million to $17.3 million, the National Center for Health Statistics reported.
Pfizer has said the company is no longer accepting patients' drugs and is taking "unnecessary steps" to change the practice.
"This is part of a trend we are seeing in the pharmaceutical industry which has been increasing in number and number of prescriptions written for prescription drugs," said Ian Read, president and chief executive of the pharmaceutical industry group Pfizer Consumer Healthcare, which represents the U. and its overseas clients. "This is in response to an increasing number of reports that the pharmaceutical industry has become increasingly suspicious of drug prices, and that has increased the pressure on the pharmaceutical industry."
